Between 2015 and 2018, the Foundation was engaged by the Department of Justice NSW to investigate the quality and utility of NSW civil court and tribunal data to inform policy and practice. This was part of a broader Department of Justice NSW project to optimise the use of civil court and tribunal data for evidence-based decision-making.
For each jurisdiction, the Foundation analysed data to respond to a series of policy questions, including:
- Who is taking action against whom?
- About what matters?
- What are these matters worth?
- Are matters defended/how do parties participate?
- Are parties represented and by whom?
- How do matters progress to finalisation?
- How long do matters take?
- How are matters finalised?
