The Law and Justice Foundation of NSW has published a new study on lawyers’ views on access to justice in regional, rural, and remote (RRR) NSW.
This research draws on rich interview data capturing legal professionals’ perspectives on how legal services operate, what might support or hinder access to justice in the regions, and what role technology can play in addressing the legal needs of these communities.
For legal assistance service providers, access to justice in RRR is a constant balancing act between tough challenges, complex decisions, competing demands, and an unwavering dedication to support those who need it most. Anchored within local communities, legal assistance providers link in with social services and reach out to fill gaps in legal support, tirelessly working towards a client-focused more equitable justice system.
The findings highlight the importance of local knowledge, place-based models and collaboration, alongside nuanced perspectives on how technology can support access to justice without exacerbating inequity.
Findings from this project have wide relevance to legal and non-legal policymakers, service providers and community groups seeking to improve access to justice for people living in RRR areas.
