In 2015, the Department of Justice NSW engaged the Foundation to investigate the quality and utility of NSW civil court and tribunal data to inform policy and practice. This was part of a broader Department of Justice NSW project to optimise the use of civil court and tribunal data for evidence-based decision-making.
For each jurisdiction, the Foundation analysed the data to answer a series of policy questions, including:
- Who is taking action against whom?
- About what matters?
- What are these matters worth?
- Are matters defended/how do parties participate?
- Are parties represented and by whom?
- How do matters progress to finalisation?
- How long do matters take?
- How are matters finalised?
