Children’s Court of New South Wales

A specialist court which deals with matters related to the care and protection of children and young people, as well as criminal cases concerning children and young people who were under 18 years old when they committed the crime.

Coroner’s Court of New South Wales

Legal proceedings, in the form of an inquest or inquiry, are held and presided over by the NSW State Coroner and other NSW coroners, who investigate all sudden, unexpected or unexplained deaths, suspected deaths, fires and explosions.

Court of Appeal

The final court of appeal in NSW, which hears applications for leave to appeal and appeals from single judges of the Supreme Court and from other NSW courts and tribunals.

Court of Criminal Appeal

The highest criminal court in NSW, where a person who has been convicted or pleaded guilty and has been sentenced by a Supreme Court or District Court judge, may appeal.

District Court of New South Wales

The intermediate court in the State’s judicial hierarchy which hears indictable criminal offences (with exception to murder, treason and piracy), appeals from lower courts and civil proceedings.

Drug Court of New South Wales

A specialist court which takes referrals from the Local and District Courts of offenders who are dependent on drugs and establishes a program for each offender to assist with treatment and monitoring to help break drug dependency and criminal behaviour.

Federal Circuit Court and Family Court of Australia

A national court which has jurisdiction in general federal law matters, as well as family law and child support matters. The court hears appeals from State Family and Supreme Courts.

Federal Court of Australia

Australia’s federal court which covers almost all civil matters arising under Australian federal law and some summary and indictable criminal matters.

High Court of Australia

The highest court in the Australian judicial system that interprets and applies the law of Australia and decides cases of special federal significance including challenges to the constitutional validity of laws and to hear appeals, by special leave, from Federal, State and Territory courts.

Land and Environment Court of New South Wales

A specialist superior environmental and planning court that hears a wide range of civil disputes, including environmental, development, building, and planning disputes.

Local Court of New South Wales

The lowest court in the judicial hierarchy of NSW which deals with summary cases, committal hearings for serious criminal cases, minor civil cases, bail applications, AVOs, some family law, and RMS appeals.

NSW Supreme Court

The highest court in NSW which has unlimited civil jurisdiction and handles the most serious criminal matters.

Youth Koori Court

A modified process within the usual Children’s Court process which improves upon the involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, their families and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isander community throughout the court process.
